“O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help”… “Then King Jehoshaphat bowed low with his face to the ground. And all the people of Judah and Jerusalem did the same, worshiping the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 20:12, 18
Some would say that the natural human reaction to foreseeable hardship is that of fear and anxiety, but it’s interesting, the Lord tells us time and time again, “Do not be afraid.” Easier said than done, right?! Jehoshaphat illustrates how to face life’s battles with Holy confidence. Often when faced with frightening situations we attempt to muster up courage and then remain paralyzed by fear. Rather than being led by his imagination to look upon the future with fear, Jehoshaphat actually looked backwards on all the times the Lord had been faithful. Remembering all of the times that God has been faithful helps us to exercise faith in the Father and trust that He is for us. The second thing Jehoshaphat did was to worship. Worship is a lot easier in times of celebration and gladness, but where it truly has the power to transform is in times of fear and desperation. Worship turns our hearts and our minds away from ourselves and toward our King. This means that instead of focusing on ourselves, God gives us a channel to gaze upon and receive the truth of His omnipotent love.
Whatever you are facing this month, remember: God is with you and for you. Remind yourself of instances of Father’s faithfulness, and turn your fearful heart to Him in worship.
