Yom Teruah: A Solemn Reminder

Share this:

One of the holiest dates on God’s calendar is called in Hebrew Yom Teruah, which translated means, “The day of shouting or blasting.” In traditional Judaism it is called Rosh Hashanah, meaning Head of the Year. Most of us know and call this day The Feast of Trumpets. God established it in Leviticus: “The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD.’” Leviticus 23:23–25

What is striking here is that we are told to blow the trumpet as a reminder, but the question is – what exactly are we being called to remember?

I believe the Book of Exodus provides the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of this passage.

“Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the entire mountain quaked violently. When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him with thunder” (Exodus 19:18–19).

Notice in the scripture above that the blowing of the divine trumpet, signals the powerful breakthrough of God’s Kingdom into the world when the trumpet grew louder and louder and God spoke breaking in with thunder.

Beloved, just as God descended on Mount Sinai in a dramatic display of power, preceded by the sound of the shofar, so too, Jesus will appear in Glory, with the trumpet of God. Yeshua’s return will be announced from heaven by a cosmic, heavenly shofar that will be heard around the entire world. And every eye will see Him— even those who pierced Him. The Creator of the world will reveal Himself to His creation in a breakthrough display of His Power and Glory.

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16

We should live every day in anticipation of the culmination of our faith—Messiah Jesus’ second coming. As we celebrate the Feast of Trumpets, let’s take the opportunity to rekindle our expectation to see Him. During this season of the Feast of Trumpets, let us take time to pause and wake up to the reality that our God is going to disclose Himself to the world – soon! Now get this: The Lord calls every generation to live with holy expectancy, carrying the hope that His return could happen in their lifetime.

I want to ask you now to do something: Put your hand over your heart and confess out loud these words “Jesus is coming back for me.” Do you feel that?

“Yes, I am coming quickly” (Revelation 22:20).
