“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, “From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.””
—John 7:38
There are many things that motivate people to follow Yeshua, but this is what moves me. I’m not after religion; I’m after the reality described in today’s verse. I want rivers of living water to flow from my innermost being.
I like to think of the words Jesus spoke in John 7:38 as a scientific reality. By depending on Yeshua, we can drink of the invisible, supernatural waters of His Spirit. The visible world is not ultimately what is real. The visible world will pass away. What is real is the invisible world that created this visible world. “By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible” (Heb. 11:3). Today’s verse is speaking about the scientific reality of the invisible world that you and I can experience in the here and now.
Jesus said, “He who believes in Me….” To believe means more than just saying, “Yes, I believe.” It means we stake our life in what we claim to believe. It means we are so convinced that we live for it. When I survey my life over the last fifteen years, the transformation has been clearly and truly supernatural. People who knew me years ago say, “Rabbi, you’re not the same person. Your voice doesn’t even sound the same anymore.” What is the difference? It’s that more and more I’ve been able to drink from the waters of life.
Beloved, whatever it costs, whatever you have to give up, whatever you have to sacrifice to follow Jesus—do it. Seek Him. Put Him first, and you will drink more and more from these rivers of living water that Jesus promised. More and more you will live from the inside out rather than from the outside in, and a well of living water will spring up from the inside of you. Living waters will flow forth from you, changing both your life and those around you.
Father God, I long to drink of Your living water that will never run dry. As I drink from the river of Your Spirit, may Your truth bubble forth from within me, transforming my life and touching those around me. Father God, in Yeshua’s name I ask You to help me stay thirsty, so I can receive more and more of You!
