“And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:3–4
When we share our faith with people and they reject it, oftentimes in the natural we feel as though they are rejecting us. Sometimes people are hostile when we share truth with them. When we share moral standards with a world that is in opposition to God’s authority, we will experience blowback. When we talk about Jesus being the only way, when we talk about marriage being between a man and a woman, or when we talk about the gospel itself, we will at times get hostile reactions. When that happens, we can be tempted to take the rejection and the hostility personally. But I want to remind you that they are not rejecting you. Rather, their minds have been blinded by the god of this world.
Be encouraged, beloved. People will reject us. Jesus said, “If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you, because the student is not greater than his teacher. I am the teacher. If they rejected Me, they are going to reject you too.” (See Matthew 10:24–25 and John 15:20.) But remember, Jesus also said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:10, NKJV).
I want to inspire you to keep on speaking the truth in love. Keep on being bold. Keep on lifting up God’s standards to the world because we have been called to be lights and truth bearers in the earth. The Lord told His disciples to go out and preach the gospel, to share the truth, and if the people receive the word, stay there. But if they reject it, shake the dust off your feet and go on to the next town. (See Matthew 10:5–15.)
It is the same way when we are sharing with individuals today. When sharing Messiah Jesus with a person who is interested, keep speaking the truth. But if someone is rejecting the message, move on to the next person. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house” (Matt. 5:14–15).
Father God, I thank You for the courage and boldness to always stand for You. Help me to not fear rejection but to keep speaking the truth.
