Matthew’s primary purpose in writing his gospel was to reach the Jewish people. He wanted to ensure them that Jesus was The One that they were waiting on – The prophesied Messiah in the Hebrew Bible. This is why Matthew begins his gospel by tracing Jesus’ lineage all the way back to Genesis.
“The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew 1:1
Matthew was very careful to point out that Jesus was the one that was prophesied of by David and is the fulfillment of the seed of Abraham. By connecting Jesus to David and Abraham, it not only fulfilled Old Testament prophecy, but it established Jesus as the true Messiah.
Daniel, David, and other prophets spoke of Jesus’ coming.
Let’s consider the words of Ezekiel:
“Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David will be prince among them; I the LORD have spoken” Ezekiel 34:23 & 24
Jesus revealed to us in the Book of Revelation, that He is the David, which Ezekiel was prophesying about:
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” Revelation 22:16
Matthew also indicated that Jesus is the Son of Abraham, connecting Jesus all the way back to the father of the Jewish people. Matthew goes on to
establish Jesus as Israel’s true representative and the personification of their history.
God said to Abraham:
“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Genesis 22:18
Paul explains:
“Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as referring to many, but rather to one, ‘And to your seed,’ that is, Christ.” Galatians 3:16
Beloved, there is only one Jesus. Through Him all the promises of God are fulfilled and all the nations of the earth are blessed.
