Jesus gave us an insightful parable that contrasted two men. The first built his house on rock and the other built his house on the sand. The consequences of their decision is detailed below and provides a valuable lesson to us.

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell and its collapse was great” (Matthew 7:24–27).

Yeshua teaches that any man or woman who builds their house on the sand is in peril and existing in the most dangerous of states because the storms of life are inevitable. Disaster strikes, we lose our job, an economic crisis comes, health issues and so on – are unavoidable as long as we are on earth.  Listen – what we have laid as our foundation will determine our outcome.

Sand is clearly a metaphor for an unstable and unreliable foundation. It represents what happens when we place our trust in the things of this world. It is the complete opposite of a life grounded in God’s word and one looking to Him for guidance. An existence built upon the norms of society, fleshly appetites, and earthly priorities will be void of lasting peace and will end very, very badly.

We must build our entire lives, “our house,” upon Messiah Jesus. Our hearts must passionately pant after Him, as David’s did:

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God” (Psalm 42:1).

Beloved, when we make Father our refuge and our first love, we will go from grace to grace, from glory to glory, and from joy to joy. We will establish a solid foundation that will withstand all the “storms” of life. In God our victory is assured!

Let us be like the Shulamite bride: “A locked garden is my sister, my bride, A locked spring, a sealed fountain” (Song of Songs 4:12).

She had entered so deeply into Yeshua that she was secured.

Yes, it is by grace, but we have our part to play: “Come close to God and He will come close to you” (James 4:8).

Let’s be like Jotham, who “became mighty because he ordered his ways before the Lord his God” (2nd Chronicles 27:6).
