Total Dependence

“Who is a rock, except our God, the God who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless?”
— Psalm 18:31–32

There is no rock, nothing solid or stable in life, except God. Messiah Jesus gave us this parable to illustrate this fact: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall” (Matt. 7:24–27).

Yeshua was David’s life. The air David breathed was the ruach (breath) of the Spirit and the Word of God. This is what made him a great king. David’s relationship with Yeshua was so dependent and tender that David compared it to that of a child depending on his mother. David wrote in Psalm 131:2–3, “Like a weaned child rests against his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever.” Even though David lived during Old Testament times, we know that he knew Yeshua as Messiah because of what David said in Psalm 110:1, “The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.’” Yeshua declared in Luke 20:41–43 that David was referring to Him in this psalm.

Through Yeshua, the Lord was continually nurturing David because of David’s dependency upon Him. And because David was totally dependent, he was made strong in God’s power, and his way was made blameless. You see, the key to entering into God’s victory is humility, and humility is dependence upon the Lord. In loving and clinging to the Rock of Israel, you too will become very mighty.

Father God, I need You. You are the source of my strength. You are the air I breathe. You are my life and my rock. I want to place myself completely in Your hands, to be totally surrendered to You. Spirit of God, train me to know that I can do nothing without You. And make me know that through You I can and will conquer and overcome all.
