““Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”
—Exodus 17:6

In Exodus 17 the children of Israel were wandering in the wilderness and couldn’t find water, so they began to grumble and complain. Moses cried out to God, asking Him what to do, and the Lord told Moses to strike the rock and water would come out. Moses did as the Lord said, and God supernaturally provided water for the people to drink.

There are many lessons to glean from this miracle, but I want to point out something simple but, I believe, quite profound. God intervened supernaturally, but Moses had a part to play. The Lord could have just spoken to the rock and caused water to flow out of it, but instead He had Moses do something. He told him to strike the rock to bring the water forth. The same thing happened when the Israelites were at the Red Sea with the Egyptians in hot pursuit. The Lord had Moses do something—stretch out his staff over the sea—before He parted the water.

The same thing is happening in your life and in mine. It is as we are obeying the Lord, as we are moving forward in life, as we are following His voice, that miracles happen. If you are obedient to the Lord, you will find that supernatural blessings will follow you, just as they followed Moses.

Father God, You are still a supernatural, miracle-working God who intervenes in the lives of Your people. I choose to strike the rock—to walk in obedience to Your Word—and as I do, I believe I will see miracles and breakthrough in my life. Thank You in advance for mani- festing Your supernatural power to me and giving me victory.
