…Christ in you, the hope of glory.
—Colossians 1:27
Breakthrough comes in two primary forms: circumstantial and spiritual. Breakthrough in our circumstances is important, but it can only bring temporary contentment.
Years ago I was going through a very difficult time. I had wrestled all through high school and built my whole identity around it. But when I graduated and walked off the wrestling mat for the last time, I suddenly felt lost.
As I sat in our family room one day, I looked out the window and felt a deep sense of emptiness inside. My circumstances had changed, and who I was seemed to have disappeared with them. I looked outside at the lovely nature. But you know what? It couldn’t do anything for me. Because my soul was lost and confused, nothing on the outside made a difference.
Our circumstances are like the scenery outside a window. There are some circumstances that we enjoy, but at the deepest level they really can’t do anything for us. They are part of the material world, and our deepest needs can only be met by God, who is Spirit. If we are only looking for breakthrough in our circumstances, we will come up empty. Thus, the real key to abundant life is getting breakthrough in the spirit! How do we get this breakthrough? By drawing ourselves out of that which exists in the material world and pressing into the reality of Christ in us, the hope of glory.
