Since aging, Rabbi and I see correlations between the care we take for our body, and the health of our bodily functions. When I was younger, I thought my body was so invincible that I could push myself to work intensively, without exercise and on only a few hours of sleep, with no undue consequences. Professional athletes believe that they can push their bodies to the limit, even experiencing bodily injuries to their bones, joints, tendons and ligaments, without any fear of how their body will survive and function in the future. But Beloved, the values and choices we make catch up with us. In the USA and around the world, statistics of physical and emotional disease reveal that we are a culture sickened by unhealthy and ungodly values that have been marketed to us as good and profitable.

Let’s ask the LORD, “What does my culture value that is, consciously or unconsciously, negatively impacting me, my family, and my society?” In this free-world marketing, we have naively trusted that our government would protect us by banning unhealthy products from the Market, be it foods, drugs, or technology. But such is not the case. We are inundated with products and media that lure us into vices that end in disease and destruction. 

With the Wind of the Holy Spirit blowing in our hearts, this Shavuot/Pentecost, let’s wake up and shift from what our culture is selling us to choose life-giving values, goals and strategies. 

“… I have placed before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding close to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days … Deuteronomy 30:19b-20a”
