“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
—Romans 5:8
Once when I was ministering at a congregation in Toledo, Ohio, I asked the people to raise their hand if they sometimes wonder whether God really loves them. I would say roughly half the congregation raised their hand in response to my question. But I wasn’t really surprised. I have felt that way myself.
Despite hearing that God loves us and knowing it is repeatedly declared in Scripture, sometimes we wake up and just don’t feel God’s love. For whatever reason, some days we try to reach out to God, and we just don’t feel connected to Him. But over the years I have learned what I must do when I begin to feel that way—I have to turn to and focus on the truth of God’s Word.
The Bible says in Romans 5:8 that God proved His love for us by sending Jesus to die for us when we weren’t even looking for Him. It says that while we were yet sinners, Messiah died for us. We don’t have to wonder if God loves us because that verse answers the question. Yes, beloved, God loves us, and He proved it in objective reality when Jesus went to the cross.
So on those days when you are not feeling emotionally connected to God, remember the Word. God loves you. That fact is forever settled. He loved you before you even knew who He was. Remind yourself of that whenever you don’t “feel” anything. Faith isn’t based on feeling. It is based on the Word of God, and the Word says God really loves you. Let’s believe even when we don’t feel it.
Father God, thank You for loving me even when I don’t feel anything. Help me to live in the reality of this truth.
